I feel that anyone who is using these silk products as part of a vegan lifestyle should carefully consider the process, and see if it really fits with their philosophy.” For the entire article on Ahimsa Silk, please click here.

Basic Silk Information

Silk is an incredible fiber. Luxurious, strong, shimmering, flexible. The secret of silk production was unlocked after 2,000 years, breaking China’s hold on the mysterious fiber. China continues to lead the way in silk production with India coming in second. India does lead in production of tussah silk though.

The two most popular types of silk fibers are Bombyx and Tussah. Both are beautiful, strong, and have a glorious sheen. Bombyx silk is considered the best quality silk on the market. It is soft, white, and luxurious.

Tussah silk has a creamy color due to eating leaves containing tannin. Many teachers recommend starting with tussah silk for first time spinners of this fiber. It is less slippery but just as wonderful as other silks.
